What Will Learn?
This course will cover a wide range of topics related to special education. We’ll look at the history of special education, the legal framework for educating students with disabilities in the United States, and the current trends in special education policy.
We’ll also examine how teachers implement state and federal policies in the classroom, and why it’s important that they do so. We’ll discuss how teachers can support students with disabilities and meet their individual needs without sacrificing academic rigor or disrupting the class as a whole.
Finally, you’ll get an overview of some of the most common disabilities in children and adolescents today—as well as some strategies for communicating with parents about those issues.
This course will cover a variety of issues related to special education and the historical and contemporary issues for teachers and administrators. A focus will be given to topics that challenge professionals in this field, including: trends in placements, early interventions, behavioral interventions, instructional and assistive technology and the sustainability of research-based practices. Instructors will add content and sharpen the focus of the course as needed is a 6 credit hour course and is allotted 6 weeks of time.
